le club

On New Year’s, I went to a club in meatpacking with a few friends. Earlier, I had lunch with them and found out the friend visiting from Canada works in the same industry as I am! and my company is actually one of their smaller clients. Work excitement!

Anyway, we went out past midnight..after watching the ball drop when my mom turned it on the tv. I would have been satisfied ignoring that 2012 arrived. We were able to get a cap up to Cielo very easily, because we were in a residential area, but passed lots of drunk people along the way. I do not go out (this is my second time at a club) and the amount of drunk people surprised me. I think it’s more to do with New Year’s than anything else.

We were waiting for our friends, most of whom were drunk, and getting cold. After a slight debacle with ID (forgot it) and tickets, we got into the club. We were frisked (a first) and I paid the $75 cover (worth it?). Being house music, we had no idea what was going on, but there were some gas / smoke jets that came on every once in a while. There was also this one guy who was admirable in that he seemed totally high/drunk/out of it in general, but was also sort of dancing along. After looking up electronic music dancing, I am slightly more enlightened but also intimated by the complexity. I enjoy more of the bobbing along at the point of constructive wave interference of the super strong sub woofers. Our clothes, body, and hair shook with the music.

Something else that happened was that my two female friends were harassed. I was very ashamed of male behavior. I don’t know how to react when that happens, I think most times my friends don’t mind dancing, but others..should I like, push back? I had to pull one of my friends away from one guy who had her arm, and explain “no, they do not want to dance. It’s fine, they do not want to dance.” The guy I pulled my friend away from asked, “Do you need two?” To say the least I was incredulous, and the stalkerish guy was able to find my friends even though the small club was fairly packed. I basically need to pretend to be their brother, we’re Asian and look similar enough, no? We stayed until 4ish, and the party was going on until 6am. I don’t know how people do it.

So, that was our early twenties. At least we went out New Year’s day, technically, and were obviously superior? I did enjoy bobbing along to house music though, and it was fun, except for the harassment.
